Unless you are in the Bob Baffert camp it’s tough to get interested in California horse racing . Outside the Breeders Cup it’s been many years since I’ve wagered there even though the window tellers are up in class.

It’s a far cry from the 80’s when you had full fields , Hollywood Park,Santa Anita and Del Mar as the circuit. Trainers such as Charlie Whittingham (the bald eagle),Laz Barrera(always with the tell tale hat and cigar) up and comers Bobby Frankel, Julio Canni (always seeing these two hanging out near the paddock together looking for something to claim) Gary Jones,Wayne Lukas,Mike Mitchell,Sanford Shulman (always had his crew wearing orange t-shirts…a parade of orange leading their horses around)and many others. (not just the few who dominate now) Nine races a day and weekday racing with full fields, You had the likes of Willie Shoemaker rounding out his career, Chris Mc Carron,Laffit Pincay,Eddie Delahoussaye,Sandy Hawley,Wesley Ward,Fernando Toro in their prime. There were crowds everyday, You’d see movie stars and celebrities mingling among the crowd. It was exciting. It was fun. Win,lose, break even you would walk away looking forward to coming back again. It was something.

I stopped watching races from Santa Anita a few years ago due to short fields and the influence Baffort seems to havre on stewards decisions, California Board on decisions they always g that go into his favor. I know many will disagree but that is their opinion too. I still enjoy Del Mar racing !!

Pre 80s were good in CA. One of my aunts who lived out in CA played the horses at SA, when it first opened, and she played a lot back in the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s and made a killing as she was a very astute handicapper. Nobody in our extended family even knew she was a horseplayer, until she died and the accountant saw that she had saved every dime she made there in a special account....
